How AI agents work in marketing

An AI agent is a system that can pursue a goal across several steps. In marketing, that usually means gathering context, choosing a next action, using approved tools and checking what happened.

A marketing agent needs more than a model.

The language model may interpret instructions and evidence, but the working system also needs context, tools, memory, permissions and evaluation. Without those components, the agent is closer to a chatbot with an ambitious job title.

  • A goal that can be evaluated
  • Trusted context and source evidence
  • Tools with limited permissions
  • Memory appropriate to the task
  • Checks, escalation and an accountable owner
02

The core loop is observe, decide, act and learn.

The agent observes a change or receives a task. It interprets the evidence, chooses among allowed next steps and uses a connected tool. The result then becomes new evidence for the system or the person supervising it.

A system becomes genuinely agentic when the observation can alter what happens next. Producing several assets from one prompt is useful generation, but it is not yet an operating loop.

03

Different agents should own different responsibilities.

A research agent may collect evidence. A planning agent may turn approved evidence into options. An activation agent may use channel tools. Splitting responsibilities can make permissions and evaluation clearer, but more agents do not automatically create a better system.

Add another agent only when the work needs a distinct context, tool set, evaluation method or accountability boundary.

04

Human control should be designed into the workflow.

Human-in-the-loop does not mean adding a vague approval box at the end. Decide which evidence people must inspect, which choices they own and what should happen when the system is uncertain or wrong.

The best boundary depends on consequence. Reversible research tasks can tolerate more autonomy than pricing, public claims, customer commitments or budget changes.

THE WORKING PRINCIPLE

A marketing agent is useful when it combines a clear goal with trusted context, limited tools, evaluation and an explicit relationship with the people accountable for the outcome.
